Signs Your Babies Rash is Bad

A little redness sometimes is normal. But if you baby has bright red skin in their diaper they could have a diaper rash.

The problem with some diaper rashes is that they aren’t just a normal one caused by irritation to the skin.

The redness could be a bacterial infection, or they could be suffering from a yeast diaper rash or fungal infection. Which can appear as white spots on their skin or little pus filled sores.

It could also be diaper dermatitis or the result of an allergic reaction.

In these severe cases you should really see your baby’s doctor as they may need a prescription medication or antifungal cream.

Cleaning an irritated bottom

When your baby has a rash it’s best to stay away from wipes.

If you are going to use wipes, the best ones are the saline only ones, but they are difficult to find.

There are sensitive skin ones you can get here, which are definitely better than conventional wipes.

They also have plain water wipes, which I would love to recommend, but apparently, a lot of people have had problems with mold forming in the packages.

It’s best to stay away from any wipes that have cleansing agents or scents at this point. They could make the problem a bad diaper rash worse.

The best way to clean a baby with diaper rash is to simply clean with water and gently pat dry.  (I keep a bunch of these in a drawer near the changing area specifically for this, you could just as easily use old wash clothes.)

I find the easiest way is to lay baby on a thick towel folded in half and use a peri bottle with slightly warmed water to clean the area. (Peri bottles are so useful even after you’ve healed up postpartum.

The bottle squeezes the warm water in exactly the right places and uses enough pressure to get the area clean without the painful diaper wipes.

It should be good enough to clear off all of your baby’s poop and help sooth the inflamed skin.

They are perfect for washing babies hair too! No more water in the eyes.)

Airing Our the Diaper Rash

Letting the area air out will help the area heal so much faster. Air is essential to quicker healing. It may get a bit messy, but totally worth it.

Moisture is what one of the main causes of diaper rash.

To air out your babies skin, start after a fresh diaper change. Then clean their skin like discussed above. Then gently pat dry the area with a soft washcloth or towel.

But instead of putting a new diaper on your baby, let your baby go diaper free for a bit.

This is super easy when they are little (No crawling means the mess stays contained.)

Put your baby in a long sleeve tee and some socks, and make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature. Let them air out while they sleep.

I would let my little man fall asleep naked on my chest with just a towel between his diaper area and me to catch any pee.

I would also position his legs so that more are was reaching the skin between all his rolls.

Think froggy style.

Once he fell asleep I’d lay him on his back to air out completely with just a washcloth covering his privates to avoid problems. (such as him peeing on his chest and waking himself up. Oops.)

When you’re going to air out your baby, make sure not to use any ointment or cream prior to the airing process, or it won’t be effective.

The ointment won’t allow air to hit and dry the skin.

Using Diaper Creams on a Bad Rash

Use a natural diaper cream. Did you know that Desitin has a rating of 5 on the EWG scale of product safety.

They literally consider it a moderately hazardous product!

Not something I feel great about smearing all over my new little guy.

Your options aren’t limited though. I’ve made my own herbal diaper cream before using this recipe.

The calendula in the oil is very soothing on baby’s bottom and making your own is definitely cheaper when using all natural products.

If you’re not the DIY type, there are great pre-made options too. My favorite is this one.

I use this ointment a lot for various skin irritations on my kiddos.

This one is also a very baby safe product with a rating of 1 on the EWG scale. (You can’t get any better than a one on their rating scale.)

Switch to cloth or organic diapers

Sometimes the diapers can actually cause a reaction on your baby’s skin, leading to the diaper rash itself.

Using cloth diapers has multiple benefits.

One being fewer chemicals against baby’s skin than conventional diapers.

I personally use cloth diapers on the regular for my babies and love them, but for those first few weeks, we use disposables.

Laundry is too much for me to handle while healing postpartum.

If your baby has a bad rash, and cloth diapers just aren’t your thing try some organic diapers, atleast until the rash is gone.

They will draw more moisture away from your baby’s skin than cloth diapers, which means the rash will heal faster.

They also don’t contain the chemicals conventional diapers do.

Yes, they are expensive sometimes, but you can find them for an affordable price. (I got a huge box for the same price as conventional ones.)

*The key to getting diapers for less, especially organic ones, is to purchase them on Amazon as a subscription.

If you look at these organic diapers their price is high per diaper. (25 cents) I personally make it a point not to go to much further from 19 cents a diaper.

If you hit the subscribe button, and purchase as a subscription then you will save over 10 dollars on the box, (making them 20 cents a diaper.)

The only drawback is, to use the subscription option you have to sign up for a family prime account (not necessary if you already have prime), but you can get a free 30-day trial and you can just go back and cancel it if you don’t want to keep it.

This gives you 20% off of diaper subscriptions.

P.S. if you purchase as a subscription, you can go back in after your purchase and cancel that subscription, and still get the lower price.

Other tips for healing a bad diaper rash

  • Avoid most commercial baby moisturizers. Many of them have chemical-based fragrances or potentially harmful ingredients. This includes baby oil.
  • Opt for natural skin moisturizers like coconut oil and sweet almond oil. Just make sure to go easy on it, baby only needs a couple drops.
  • If you MUST use a scented moisturizer use one like this, It’s EWG certified.
  • Use an herbal baby bath to heal skin faster. Even just basic Calendula is perfect for this!
  • Air, air, air! I cannot stress this enough.
  • Sunlight can help heal baby bottoms quickly too, but you have to be very careful if you decide to do this. I would sit near an open window with irritated skin in the sunlight. Just make sure not to sit for more than a few minutes at a time. You don’t want to burn your baby, which can happen very quickly.

Preventing Future Diaper Rashes

The best treatment for anything is prevention! You can prevent diaper rash in your baby. It’s key to less stress and less pain for your baby.

Make sure to change wet or soiled diapers quickly. Using zinc oxide regularly can also help prevent common diaper rashes. Apply a thick layer to your child’s rash, which helps in preventing diaper rash to begin with.
