Chiropractics and the Benefits for Pregnancy And Labor

Due to the stress of pregnancy on a woman’s body, many studies have been done to find the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy.

As pregnancy progress and baby grows the curve of your spine will start to increase.

Your pelvis and hips can get out of whack and thrown out of alignment and your posture will slowly adapt to the extra weight gain.

All of this can wreak havoc on your back and hips. Therefore, many women look to chiropractors during pregnancy to help them to feel better.

Most chiropractors are trained to make adjustments on pregnant women.

It should be pretty easy to find a prenatal chiropractor.

Of course, not all chiropractors are created equal.

There are some that have been certified to perform specifically on a pregnant woman and have completed a post-doctorate education to specialize in maternity and pediatric care.

So it may be best to try to find a specialist.

When during pregnancy can I Get a Chiropractic Adjustment?

You can begin chiropractic care early pregnancy and continue safely up until the time of birth.

They have special tables made for pregnant bodies, as well as special techniques to avoid putting any pressure on the mother’s stomach.

Chiropractors can also show their clients exercises and stretches that can be done safely during pregnancy that won’t throw off any of the chiropractic adjustments that have already been made to the spine.

Some chiropractors are even Webster Certified — trained to specifically work with women who have babies in a breech position.

Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy?

You know all those fun problems that come along with pregnancy?

Like Carpal tunnel, back pain, headaches, sciatica? Nearly every pregnant mama experiences a least ONE of these issues.

And chiropractic could be your answer to relief.

Lower back pain is often related to a condition called sacroiliac joint dysfunction, also called SI subluxation.

It’s a misalignment of a joint that causes irritation to the nerves and tissues in the area surrounding them.

Sacroiliac joints are located where the sacrum (the triangular bone above the tailbone) and hipbones (known as innominate bones) join together.

Certain hormones released during pregnancy cause the muscles, ligaments, and joints in this area to relax.

This is to allow the pelvis to open during delivery so your baby can pass through.

When you combine this relaxation effect with the weight gain in pregnancy, changes in posture and stretched out stomach muscles, they can cause a lot of stress on the spine and pelvis.

This all effects your nerves, joints and discs in the back, spine and pelvis.

Headaches can then be caused by the changes in your posture and the extra stress on your neck and mid-back.

Neck pain can also cause headaches during pregnancy because of muscle tension and is often accompanied by muscle spasms in the shoulders and neck.

Additionally, hormones and swelling cause 20% of pregnant women to develop carpal tunnel, which causes painful burning, tingling, and numbness in the wrists and hands.

Finally, pains in the mid back can radiate around to the ribcage and cause the nerves between the ribs to become irritated.

It can even be confused with muscle pains, when in fact it’s the nerves.

Benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy

Not only has chiropractic care has been shown to relieve common aches and pains from the weight gain and spinal stress, but it can also reduce the amount of time a woman spends in labor, and some of the pain associated with labor! Biggest benefit yet!

This study stated

Results of the study support the hypothesis that prenatal OMT may reduce the occurrence of some complications of pregnancy, labor, and delivery”

Having regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy could even reduce the chances of back labor.

This study stated

noted that chiropractic manipulation may significantly decrease the incidence of “back labor.” The relative risk of experiencing back labor was almost 3 times greater if back pain was experienced during the pregnancy.”

Having chiropractic care during pregnancy can be a way to help control nausea, relieve back, neck, and joint pain, keep her from having to have a cesarean section and help her have a healthier pregnancy overall.

As an added bonus, chiropractors that are Webster Certified have the ability to turn a breech baby with a special technique that establishes balance in a pregnant woman’s pelvis and reduces unnecessary stress to her uterus and the ligaments that support it, thus making the pelvis balanced and it easier for the baby to turn naturally.

The Webster Technique was developed by the late Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and has an 82% success rate even as early as the eighth month.
